ABSTRACT
Homogeneous nucleation theory is employed in Fletcher (1970) to arrive at a formula for formation of ice from water. We identify T with the “snow point” and derive the equation in a few short steps. The formula is (5.16) from Fletcher solved for T, assuming what happens in the laboratory mimics what happens in a cloud.
T = (D ΔSv ΔT) / (k v ns a)
Then, using some other information, the result is.
T = D (7.15 x 107)/(k a ns ΔT0.69)
It should be noted that ΔT = To – T, is the underooling for formation of ice in the cloud.
